Royal Bank is the most profitable of all large Canadian banks and is a long-term consistent performer. Banco Bradesco of Brazil (BBD) made it to this list at number two beating competitor Banco Itau Unibanco (ITUB).Among the big four Australian banks Westpac (WBK) and Commonwealth Bank Group are on this list.Bank of America Corp (BAC) and US Bank (USB) are the only two US banks in the rankings but came in at the bottom of the list mirroring the performance of the housing markets and the U.S. economy in general.

Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) tops the list with total assets of $3.5 T. This amount has grown so high for RBS because it acquired ABN Amro Bank of The Netherlands in 2007 . That deal was the largest banking merger in history. ABN Amro was acquired by a consortium consisting of RBS, Fortis and Banco Santander. This deal is now not only the largest banking merger, but probably one of the worst deals ever since ABN was acquired at the peak of the credit bubble.

Out of the three Chinese banks in this list Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China are new entrants this year.Chinese banks are growing rapidly due to strong lending environment in the domestic market as well as growth in select markets overseas. In one of the strategic moves, ICBC of China acquired a 20 percent stake in South Africa’s Standard Bank in late 2007 for expansion into Africa. Standard Bank is one of the regional heavyweights in Africa with significant presence in many countries.

Another new entrant to the top 25 list is US-based Wells Fargo (WFC). Wells Fargo’s acquisition of Wachovia last year increased its total assets. Llyods Bank (LYG) acquired UK’s largest mortgage lender HBOS plc last year as well.

The Banker magazine released the Top 1000 world banks for 2009 based on their Tier 1 capital.

“For the first time in the Top 1000’s 39-year history, the top 25 banks – which account for almost 40% of the Top 1000’s Tier 1 capital and almost 45% of its total assets – recorded a loss, which totalled $32.37bn (-28.1% of Top 1000 profits). Stripping out the profits of the lower reaches of the Top 25 means that the top five banks fared even worse. Representing 13.4% of total Tier 1 capital and 12.3% of total assets, the top five banks lost a staggering $95.8bn (-83.3% of total profits).

The worst losses are at the UK’s Royal Bank of Scotland, with $59.3bn (including losses attributable to minority interests), followed by the US’s Citigroup, with $53bn, and Wells Fargo, which lost $47.7bn. The UK’s HBOS produced the sixth worst losses in the world (see table of worst losses).”
